| Above photos - November, 2006 - Approximate weight: 215 lbs. On November 8, 2007 I underwent emergency surgery resulting in the removal of my gall bladder, appendix, a portion of my small intestine & 75% of my colon. All of this was the result of an undiagnosed ulcer in my small intestine which had perforated sometime in early 2007. There were no signs of cancer, but my colon had gone septic. When discharged from Carilion RMH on December 13, 2007, my weight was barely 120 lbs. I currently wear an ostomy bag which I will wear throughout 2008. In early 2009 I should be a candidate for a re-section. I was able to begin driving again in early January, 2008; a true relief to regain a little personal independence. As of April 17th, 2008 my weight is holding at 155 lbs. My next medical appointment is in May. The surgical staff believes it will be another few weeks before my wound is fully healed and overall they are pleased with my continued progress even if it seems amazingly slow to me. I still find a great need for rest & sleep. My sole source of income until April 1st of this year has been thru the continuing generosity of a handful of wonderful friends; some of whom I did not even realize I had. As of April 1st, I am temporarily receiving a small monthly check from SSI. I have also applied for a VA Disability Pension, however that approval or disapproval is still months away. The monthly check from SSI certainly helps, but I am still well short of covering my monthly living expenses. Workwise, my surgeon informs me that physically I am fully disabled for at least the next year. |
